Q: Can
I anodize myself.
A: Of course you can. Anyone can learn anything
they put their hearts and wallets to. Check our links pages for
information and forums to learn how and what is involved.
And if someone tells you you can do quality anodizing with a car
battery charger, move on to the next site as fast as you
can.
Q: Can any aluminum be
anodized?
A: The quick
and short answer is
yes. But, some aluminums such as cast
are harder and often
do not look right because of silica
content, contaminants, etc.
But it can be done-
just no guarantees how well it will turn out.
Q: Why are
all my parts "white" on the corners and sharp edges?
. A: if
you look at the anodizing structure here.
(CLICK ME). You will
notice that the cells only grow at right angles to the Aluminum.
Well it also grows that way on the sides. That means there
is little to no anodizing on the sharp corner and since there is
no cells or pores there then there is no place to hold the dye.
Q: I had
some pieces anodized and they have faded in the sun, is this
normal?
A: Well the sun
will fade anything over enough time, but if had premature fading
then whoever did the anodizing probably used and organic
die(like RIT and many paint dyes) that are not UV resistant.
Q: Does your anodizing and coatings cover dings or scratches on
parts?
Good question. It sure would be
nice to have a magic coating! If you are familiar with auto body
or painting, you know that all imperfections on the metal must
be filled or sanded prior to painting. The same rule applies to
metal finishing. Any imperfection on the metal (dents or deep
scratches) must be corrected prior to anodizing or coating.
